Williams - ‘Pinball’ (Tsuba) Street date 23 January

The first release on the new Tsuba label, set up by Kevin Griffiths, the former A&R at Fine records, comes from the talented minimal electro-techno don Williams.

Those with longish memories will recall Williams’ debut deep house release Glasgow Underground, but the fare here is decisively different. Clues to his new sound comes from the fact that his debut release in his current incarnation came via Booka Shade, DJ T and MANDY’s Get Physical label, for which he released the excellent ‘Piccadilly Circuits’. Further hints are that he currently plays bass in his old school chum Mylo’s band - and ‘Muscle Car’ is closer to the Williams sound than Mylo’s usual fare.

In its original mix ‘Pinball’ features all the simple but subtle grooves that make Physical releases so addictive. A high end melody coils around three notes that refrain through three chord changes, the beats kick in with mid paced groove that’s irresistibly danceable, while the bass stick to same minimal three note formulae. The remixes from Williams himself and Francisco, being Italo disco re-workings, are equally bang on the button.
