Well this seems like a first to me, on July 10th there will be a limited 10” vinyl EP with a split double A side- so you get a chance to hear both the Motorettes and Kubichek.
(erm Mariachie and Mark from the Senseless things did it back in 95 ed.)
The Motorettes kick off with “Relax it’s the 80’s” and what a great track it is – full of summer groove and grips you from the start and keeps you there till the end with a simple but great rhythm riff .Backed with simple keyboard stuff , every musical part makes a straightforward contribution, but boy does it work. Track 2 is a cover of their label stable mates Kubichek, titled stutter, it lacks the punch of the first track and is OK if it were a B-side.
So to Kubichek themselves, they deliver "Opening shot” as their first track – starting with a Transmission (Joy Division) type bass line, it starts to climb – but for some reason never seems to reach the summit you expect, and then they return the favour to the Motorettes, by covering one of their tracks “We are Solution”- again, starts promising , but they seem to feel by repeating the lyric
“It’s a gas, gas, feel your self separate” is going to work – it’s pretty average and again just seems to lack any depth.
Track1: 4 out of 5
Track 2: 2.5 out of 5
Track 3: 2.5 out of 5
Track 4: 2 out of 5
Out on July 10th on Kitchenware records
