The worst thing about the increasingly cannibalistic East London indie-electro scene is that so many great songs are being lost under a sneer of "Oh, another bunch of indie pricks hanging out on Brick Lane with synthesisers". And for the most part, that kind of attitude is a good thing.
But ‘Nightmare’ is a catchy little chunk of electrolysed punky throb. With a beefy but precise bass and with more loops at their fingertips than a spaghetti junction, it’s day-glo without sounding garish. If Hadouken! turned down the contrast (a touch) and lost themselves in artrock tribal beats, not only would they cut out so much of what makes them irritating, but they might even be able to imagine something that grabs you as roughly and as fiercely as this.
B-side, ‘For The Wolves’ is just as darkly aggressive on the electronics, with vocalist Doran and the slightly submerged guitars taking the inhuman edge off. It may well get lost amongst all the other pretenders out there, but with a twinge of Dexy’s and a brace of beats, but The Ghost Frequency is something you don’t want to lose amongst the background noise of the Idiots.
‘Nightmare’ is out on August 13 on City Rockers. They tour with Hadouken! From October. Click here for details.
