The backlash is starting, you can feel it in the wind – or maybe that should be the airwaves? Like Britpop a decade ago, the dark clouds are gathering around the current crop of indie bands, and only the strongest look set to survive. After all, for every Kaiser Chiefs there’s a dozen of The Twang…
The cynical view to take would be to say that The Enemy were signed off the back of the Arctic Monkeys-surge that has brought “regional voices” back to fore. Release a couple of limited-release singles (like say…”40 Days & 40 Nights” and “It’s Not OK”) to build some buzz, create some momentum, then let the Big One loose to try to break them wide open…
But “Away From Here” is damn, damn, damn catchy. It’s as if Dogs put on some Kappa trousers and went down the football to hurl insults at the away fans. Tom Clarke is practically chewing the words right out of the air when he spits “to stay at home with Richard and JEW-DEE”. The chorus practically begs to have huge crowds jumping up and down, spilling beer on each other out of flimsy cardboard pint glasses at some festival or another.
Because leaving the cynicism at the door, this is a damn, damn, damn good song.
“Away From Here” is out on Stiff Records on April 16.
