There’s a certain rockabilly charm to this, the latest single from New Zealand’s The Checks. Okay, so the guitars are so Kings of Leon they might as well have stolen then straight out the back of Caleb Followill’s pickup truck, but there’s something just that bit more joyous about it – certainly compared to the Tennessee four-pieces last record.
Vocalist Edward Knowles sounds breathless as his bluesy drawl starts to speed up till his words are trying to overtake one other, and those bluegrass harmonies on the chorus could raise a smile on a corpse.
But it does beg the question – what’s the point? With the aforementioned Kings of Leon, local stuff like White Russians, hell, even those jokers, Jet – you could slot this song into the mix with any number of tracks from those bands and this would just fade into the background.
This is supposed to be a single! This should jump out and grab you by the throat and by the balls at the same time. At best, this gives you a gentle squeeze round the shoulders and give your cheek a gentle pinch.
‘Take Me There’ is out on Full Time Hobby Records. Their UK tour started yesterday – for more details click here
