If you have ever wondered what would happen if Ricky Martin mistakenly wandered into recording sessions for The Bravery’s difficult second album, then listening to the Sound Team comes pretty close.
The problem with Born To Please is that it has got itself mixed up in all sorts of confusion.
First there’s the shimmering electronic new-wave indie intro, so far so good. But then in comes the clichéd strained Euro-pop vocals with lyrics about big doors and sunshine. Thrown into the mix are pop-standard, soft drums and throbbing, plucked guitars.
It is an interesting hybrid which is sure to sound much better on a car stereo – but I was relieved when my amp decided it had had enough and sputtered out.
