After the welcome back rollercoaster of a track that was ‘Our Velocity’, Maximo Park have peeled off one of the calmer numbers off the new record for the second single.
Paul Smith still has a lyrical turn of phrase that balances storytelling with an intimate melody that beckons you in for conspiratorial whispers. With his northern vowels rolling over lines that juggle whimsy with acerbic observations about transient relationships, Smith leaves the listener with a song to peg their own personal dramas too, while leaving the listener in no doubt that there’s a dark tale of his own lost obsessions in there too.
Perhaps the only flaw is that it’s a bit too twee. With the debut album creaking at the seems with songs that spat and sparked with barely concerned hyperactivity, ‘Books From Boxes’ seems even more sedate than it really is.
