I’d forgotten about the Infadels until late last year, when suddenly without warning my TV started blasting out ‘Can’t Get Enough’ over some car advert or another.

“Wow, I wonder what’s happened to them?” I thought. I’d first come across the London five-piece at Reading Festival back in 2005 when I staggered into the Dance Tent, somewhat worse for wear, only to be simultaneously mesmerised and knocked off my feet, as they pounded out a mix hard pulsing electronic beats combined with an acute ear for what gives the oomph to the best power-pop.

Well, it turns out they’re back with a new album – Universe In Reverse out in June – and this single before it. However, whereas before it was the guitar-weaknesses were masked with skyscraper-sized synths, the roles of the dominant instrument appears to have flipped, and not necessarily for the better.

So instead now we get a verse of fairly generic indie licks, and a loud but oddly clawless chorus. This is the kind of song that probably sees being used for the opening montage on an episode of Hollyoaks as the pinnacle of achievement. Even vocalist Bnann (and that’s no typo) seems to have had the sharp corners of his performance smoothed by some MOR harmonizing.

And then we saw the band had cheekily knocked up some promo artwork featuring Mr & Mrs Ashley Cole. Stone. Cold. Genius. All is forgiven lads – for that alone you’re welcome on the Music Towers stereo anytime.

‘Make Mistakes’ by Infadels is out today (April 21) on Wall Of Sound. They are on tour throughout Europe before returning to the UK this summer for festival season.
