The press blurb for Idle Lovers talks up their formation in Hackney, and namedrops all sorts of tenuous connections to various NME cover star-types, be it through shared producers or simply the fact that Idle Lovers supported them once. It’s all about positioning the band alongside established figures of success.

 

The problem is that this record sounds five years too late. I can see someone somewhere, shouting “at least they’re not afraid to write pop songs” – a get-out clause often harped about when Men With Guitars try to write something with a easy hook to get radio play without losing their precious credibility.

 

It’s all well and good, but 'Big Impression' is just not a very good pop song. It's like sucking down on a melted bowl of vanilla ice cream in October. It's gloopy, lacking the icy sparkle that could've made it a treat, and has arrived far too late for the musical climate that would've suited it better.

 

B-side ‘Heart Condition’ has a big robust punky bassline, that could’ve almost been on the cheeky side of punk. As is, it merely acts to somewhat clean up the bland splodge that the lead track
