Music Towers has a a mix of memories wiuth regards to Brighton: a multitude of Great Escape festivals, the worst clubnight any of us have ever been to (and we’ve been on nights out in Reading), pushing a man out of a cab in a fight before shouting “GO! GO! GO!” at the taxi driver like we were in some lowbudget action film, and discovering The Eigties Matchbox B-Line Disaster shaking some toilet venue or another to the foundations. Good times and some bad.
Gloria Cycles are the latest good excuse we’ve heard for decamping out the smoke to go live it up by the seaside. The Brighton four-piece have been slowly gathering a fanbase in their base on the South Coast, recently winning the Emergenza Festival Competition (erm…yes?). And now they're are putting out a single, 'Vegas', on their own label, Wendy Bike Records.
It sounds a bit like someone kidnapped a few members of !!!, forced them at gunpoint to form a band with half of Supergrass, and then strong-armed The Delays in for song-writing duties. ‘Vegas’ is catchy enough that it will rattle around your mind like a moth somehow stuck inside your skull for the four minutes it lasts, while remaining breezy enough not to get stuck in there all day and by doing so giving you a headache.
The less said about the embarrassing Muddy Banks remix the better – it still rings in our ears like the memory of our most terrible Brighton adventures. Vocalist Kenny McCracken sounds far better with his voice unfettered by studio effects, and left to quietly ride the growing rhythms of the song proper.
‘Vegas’ by Gloria Cycles is out on 7” on June 30 on Wendy Bike Records. The band are touring the south of England throughout the Summer– full details are only a click away.
