Connan And The Mockasins
Title: Sneaky Sneaky Dogfriend / I Nude You
Label: Regal
Release Date: 29th January

Yes, the singer really is called Connan and he really does wear moccasins, but what you really need to know is that beyond question this record will make you happy.

Sneaky, Sneaky Dogfriend is a throw back, a slurred homage to 60s garage rock played at 33rpm instead of 45. Swaggering drum rolls, double bass licks, chopped riffs and woozy trombone back up Connan’s cheeky, childlike vocals.

God only knows what he’s on about but it’s hard not to fall for the Peter Pan Brian Jones, whose enthusiastic on-stage idiosyncrasies include frog jumps, swallowing his microphone and lots of goofy grins.

On the flip side, I Nude You shows Connan and the Mockasins in playful jazz mood. The velvety blue tones of the double bass weave with Conan’s naughty but straight-laced vocals before a sultry guitar fritters away the rest of the five minutes.

Here’s the catch, you’ll think Connan and the Mockasins are retro, that you’ve heard it all before – or at least that your Mum and Dad have - but honestly you’ve not heard anything like this.

The New Zealand trio have already begun attracting a lot of nasty hype but let’s hope they survive all that because the good thing about Connan’s crew is that they mean it, they play with smiles, people dance so hard at their gigs the floor shakes – and I know because my beer fell over, dammit.

They deserve good things. Go buy the record.

4/5

The double A-side is the first Regal Singles Club release of 2007 but don't let the Lilly Allen associations put you off. The record is out on 29 January.
