Bloody hell (excuse the pun), when did bands get so young? I’m still Officially In My Mid-Twenties, but when there are bands like Blood Red Shoes knocking out tracks as good as this, it makes everything I have ever done look like a big fat ugly failure in comparison.
Because it is a damn good single from a pair of kids from Brighton, who if they carry on at this trajectory, will be putting more than the lazybones achievements of a few web-journos to shame. More menacing that 90% of the gash masquerading as modern metal, more melodic than 90% of everything pretending to be pop, ‘I Wish I Was Someone Better’ is a spiky contender for Single of the Year. From the questioning chorus vocals of Steven Ansell and Laura-Mary Carter, right through to the mounting crescendo of the song title as the track nears the end, Blood Red Shoes’ sixth single (on their fifth label) is as good an appetite-whetter for their debut album next year as they, us, you, and anyone with a modicum of taste could wish for - nevermind wishing for someone better.
‘I Wish I Was Someone Better’ is out now on V2 Records. Blood Red Shoes are currently on tour in Europe, and will be coming to the UK in November.
