This four piece from Aberdeen have been supporting some pretty big names recently, Muse, Bloc Party and Young Knives for starters. So I was looking forward to hearing this-
Track one called Dianne- conjured up instant comparisons with the Jam (the riff is almost identical to Eaton rifles!) but there were tinges of the Buzzcocks-even dare I say it –early Tubeway Army! But within the same breadth, I started thinking of the Strokes. Delivery Day (track 2) is a pretty awful Maximo Park rip off without the quality of Maximo’s catchy riffs- and so track 3 completely threw me (Black belt) which starts with a pretty cool bass riff-then sounds like a rabid- Buddy Holly meets the Shadows!
But I have a problem with all this comparison of other bands- because unlike Ambulance ltd or say The Kings of Leon who although are influenced- it’s not obvious, with the Needles it’s so the opposite- If there was such a thing as a shop that sold pieces of music, these boys bought a lot of pieces and now want to throw them altogether, it didn’t work for me.
