MOR at it’s finest. This latest offering ‘Girls’ from the Indie Troubadours of last Christmas. Nice songs for nice people, if no one has noticed it isn’t Shellac that stays at number 1 for weeks it is James Blunt and these guys are a welcome alternative to take Middle of the Road crown.
‘Girls’ ‘Flooded Quarry’ and ‘Yesterday’ all have slinky sexy double bass-lines, a trilogy of sentimental summer sunset songs, an almost a Tracy Chapman sound they retain the same nostalgia of their previous release and Christmas Number 1 but dispense with gimmicks of name dropping Zoids & Transformers. ‘Girls’ is the single and a pining love song it doesn’t stir the emotion of the 'JCB song', and I find my favourite on this record by far is ‘Flooded Quarry’ – The beatboxing, the swing & groove the odd vocal arrangement make it stand out and my ears stand up on attention. Although at the end of the day though, this is all very nice.. nice, like the end credits of a romantic comedy. Puts me in the mood for some Mandatory Suicide by Slayer.
