Music Towers was at Kilburn's Luminaire on Thursday night, dreading the headliners Air Traffic - having already given them two chances to prove me wrong, and raise their heads above the parapit of being utter tripe. Nope! They are still Indieschmindie slit my wristy. Why the hell did this band get signed, or are on a stage that has more production staff then punters? I just don't get it - it is bringing me down.
Just when I am contemplating taking a sharpened straw to my wrists to end the misery, someone tells me there is another band coming on. She says they are really good, and that the guitarist uses a hand held hoover on his guitar. Hold on, in the words of Bruce Dickinson 'Heaven Can Wait'...
Enter Friendly Fires - an upbeat electro indie combo (whom our Rock Editor pegged out as something to watch back in April). Their skinny jeans and white underpants might be a little abrasive on the eyes, oh but the ears... The ears are enjoying it and encouraging the feet to get into the groove as well.
The guitarist plays his grubby Les Paul with sporadic and atmospheric style, never over-playing, often getting onto his hands and knees to extract the exact note he wanted. The bass player chops and changes instruments throughout the event - always holding tight and enjoying himself.
The singer gets into the crowd, all cocky and bouncy and confident. He comes across as 0ne-part total dick, mixed with two-parts your best mate. And is perfect for breaking up this production-and-industry-laden gig.
They twiddle with synths' sometimes abandoning the drums just all singing along to a CD, guitars and basses swapped around. And there is a distinct lack of worrying about what people's roles should be. Totally brilliant.
Friendly Fires are my new favourite band and they are almost Indie... urgh. You will be able to see the show on TV sometime, look for some JD branded TV spots...
