Orson - who? That one hit wonder from last year; a band with a man in a hat.
Kind of like the Scissor Sisters? Oh yeah, I sort of remember. Indie pop/pop pop. Yes, that's them.
Tonight is an intimate show for Orson's new album at the Borderline. They play the Astoria in a couple of weeks, so this show has a buzz about it. A different crowd from most regular shows...everyone is 30/40-something, and most of them ladies. For reasons unknown, all the blondes are up the front, and brunettes are lurking at the back. Maybe it is something to do with being more fun.
Time to put snobbishness to the side: Orson are great. The crowd is singing along to every song off the last album. Pure good-time feelings here, leave your bad-tempered self at the door; office hours are over, it is a Monday night ,and it is time to have a good time.
I must confess I have no idea what any of the tracks are called, which are from the new album, and whichat are last year's classics. They look like a bunch of twits - the bassist is copying flea's playing style to a T - and the lead singer's hat and smug smile are difficult to watch. But for all of that, I come out of the gig thinking a little more positive for the human race. Imagine cross of Bon Jovi and Scissor Sisters, mixed with that one-night stand you had that time and that's an Orson gig.
