King Jacks 250

Lordy - Nambucca used to be a pretty cool little venue. It looks like a squat today. The bar is sticky the seats smell a bit creepy and the clientelle all look 16.

Which is good, as King Jacks are not one of these teeny bopper bands that play festivals for barely-concieved kids. They are a fully honed and skilled outfit; no warbling nervous voices or glowsticks here.

They used to be called The Basics, and a little bit of change in both name and line-up has done them good. The arrangements are complicated, and I have trouble keeping track of them at times (as a re-learning guitarist). Tim is an unlikely looking giant on guitar, but don't let appearances deceive, as his delicacy of fingerwork playing and backing vocals really seem to be the backbone of the band.

King Jacks are good - Franz Ferdinand good. Big songs with nice dynamic parts. Rich's voice is strong, and it is all very radio friendly indietastic tunes.

The track that stood out particularly was 'All I Got' that got the cynical tweenagers in the corner off their bums and dancing around with a bit of wild abandon. I can't help think though that if they were 17 and from the States, this gig would be in Koko.
