Sagittarius, you will revisit an old familiar haunt to try and glimpse the future – and who amongst the fray might be the ones to watch. Leave your cynicism at the door but be careful about judging on first appearances alone. A sense of déjà vu and heavy influences from the past could leave you feeling confused but try and see things for what they are here and now.

Can your first gig of the month act as a barometer for what lies ahead, like a musical horoscope?

If so, then I will take a visit to the Camden Bar Fly on 2nd October as a warning, a shot across my aural bows.  I am going to have to sharpen up and think straight if I am to avoid getting bogged down in a month-long gig-whinge of “haven’t we heard it all before?”

First band up, Circuits are a foursome from London, promoting a bass heavy, reggae-influenced brand of new wave pop. It does not take a genius to work out they like The Police – a lot – and the rhythm section is accordingly snappy and tight.

There are snatches of The Sunshine Underground, choppy guitars, a smidge of Razorlight too and cheeky lyrics, but a distinctive Circuits sound is much harder to put your finger on.

The band’s befuddled schizophrenia is personified by lead singer Benny’s bizarre approach to frontman duty. He is laconic, he is spaced out, he stares with aggressive bug-eyes, he sneers – he looks a little like a squashed Jimmy Carr. Hang on, if he keeps this up Circuits could be brilliant! But it will all go to waste unless they find a bit of musical invention to match.

EMI thought Air Traffic had enough individual flair to hand them a record contract and, after being snapped up, the quartet are being “broken” by gigging in small venues and writing a blog on MySpace.

In this mischievous mission, Air Traffic are led by the main man Chris and his Pied Piper piano, whose major chords add a hook and a groove to the fast and furious pop-rock layers of the band. The rest of the quartet are competent enough to create a good, clean sound – and even better they come complete with the exuberant bloom of youth and suitable haircuts
