Sunday Best started as a cheap and cheerful Sunday afternoon come down session, with a £1.99 door price, way back in the late Nineties.

Those weekly sessions have transformed into occasional South London summer bashes and this behemoth of an event - replacing the small upstairs room of Café Des Artists with a sprawling mass that spills over hills, through forests, passed lakes and into valleys.

Robin Hill country park is, as you’d expect, a largish, but quaint pleasure playground for kids, which of course makes it perfect for the slightly older kids gathering this weekend.

There’s adventure swings, a tree top walk, smugglers ships and that sort of thing. And where things aren’t already in situ, such as the inflatable church, SB have brought them in. Sign posts near the woods read “wood for kissing” and there’s frequent reminders in fields for “no weeing” - written in childish writing naturally.

With a fancy dress world record attempt on the weekends agenda, a majority of people have decided on an unofficial cowboys and Indians theme and apart from the ubiquitous Stetsons and Indian headdresses, there’s some amusingly abstract interpretations - a walking cactus and human wigwam being noteable examples.

A toy town adventure like this wouldn’t be complete without the presence of PC plod, and there’s no shortage of yellow blazers and slightly disconcerting sniffer dogs at the door. Apparently last year’s event was nicknamed arrestival, but this year they seem to be here as more of a photo opportunity than anything else.

Equally amusing are the security staff, whose good natured crowd control gets the better of them when they slip out of uniform and try to go undercover, sparking exchenges that go; Punter (LOUDLY): “Oh hello, I didn’t recognise you out of uniform” Security person (also LOUDLY): “shhhh… I’m undercover…”

Musically the festival had shaken off some of Sunday Best’s chill out image and bookings include the superb Soulwax/ Too Many DJs, Glimer Twins and a storming set from Grooverider and MC Rage, top tunes from Erol Alkan, much happiness from Max Sedgley, beat brokery from Bugz in The Attic, live electronics from Caged Baby, soulful four to the floor from Tom Finlayson, acid grooves from Justin Robertson, acid funk from The Egg and non stop weekend long antics from the Cuban Brothers.
