The lodger screams ‘ouch this sounds like I am in a bad restaurant’ His face looks like he has sucked on a eyeball. On first listening the general reaction is a whimsical almost trad-jazz that might scare off those of weak disposition. But once you start engaging the music and listening to the stories these idle genre-fications are thrown to the wayside.
Regina's voice is luscious the songs a fun stuttered tapestry of minimal yet busy arrangements. Somehow sounding somewhat like a rural 1940’s eccentric for a 21st century NYC poet and pianist. The artwork is rich and the album light hearted on this miserable winters day. Particular favourites tracks: ‘Love Affair’ feels like part of the soundtrack to a non-existent sequel of the film Delicatessen. The piano creeps between bedroom secrets. Mary Anne is a misunderstood, just a bit particular how dare you call her a bitch in ‘Sailor Song’. 'Pavlov’s Daughter' brings fresher styles to the LP. Back to the future in the 21st NYC watching Regina take the mic the cellar of the Knitting Factory, Word.
Mary Ann meets the Grave Diggers and other short stories by Regina Spektor is out today (16th January).
