While the heat may have partly moved on from broken beat, the West London sound has no shortage of champions old and new.

Amongst the new crop, Broadcite has continued to push the broken beat genre into new permutations, forging new fusions as they go.

This is Broadcite’s second ‘Unplugged…’ compilation and relieved of the new compilation sets about exploring the vast world that contributes to the current fusionist and future jazz scene. As such it combines different elements - organic, electronic, Latin, European, African, North American - to forge a new groove.

But while the net may be cast wide, there are some core scene moments here and Cyberworks and Daniel Veres both contribute definitive broken beat tracks.

Elsewhere studio Apartment bubbles thick jammy bass beneath soaring soprano sax, Voice supplies some fine finger popping leftfield hip hop, Quentin Harris adds cuddly four four jazz house. Meanwhile, perhaps most interesting of all, Souled move broken beat bass patterns into straight down-the-line four to the floor.

All thoroughly worth exploring.
