I am down at the Howdy Do? Club at the Borderline. I like these stints as usually get a good quality mix of bands and it gives me an excuse to play out anything that looks vaguely folky or Americana from the pile of CD’s off my desk.
Before I knew (it) Basia Bulat’s debut and opening track climbs above the parapet and clapping along 9oclock changeover. Maybe it is a little laid back for a Saturday night but this is a wonderfully uplifting ditty. So short so sweet.
Picking up the rest of the album back home hoping the sun will win over those dark clouds. I try to ignore the cynical thought of it selling you mobile phone contracts with some quirky good looking types on TV.
The next tracks continue in this vein Little Waltz being particularly lovely imagining a life that I don’t live at all. Snakes and Ladders gets me thinking of Regina Spektor is a bit of turning point in the album. Not for the better unfortunately It is the point where I switch off and suddenly forget what I am doing.
Little one. I am starting to give up and not care anymore. There is little of the dynamics that were promised on the opener and in Little Waltz and all the instruments are just strumming along doing their jobs. Her voice doesn’t seem to be doing anything and my mind isn’t understanding.
Oh I am thinking Dido now, this has gone beyond some nice folk ditties and descended straight into MOR dining music at some restaurant or maybe the walk-around-thinky-bit in a romantic comedy. Whatever it is I am now looking at the John Sweeny Scientology Video.
To own or not to own that is the question?
I feel mean today 0/1
