This album has just won the newly-generated Music Towers Award for Best Jewel Case CD Design In The World Ever. It is marvellous, from the pointless bit of paper that folds around it, to the embedded print being die-cut. Then there's the illustrations and wings and total lack of any information. Reminds me, when I next design a CD cover I am going to try and be totally minimal with information. It doesn’t need to say the name of the act, or anything else for that matter, when a podgey woman in suspenders holding a couple of babies with claws will do.
How about the music? 'Triumph of Venus'...ooh, like the turning guitars, interweaving about each other. Bit like Avenged Sevenfold's 'Beast and the Harlot' in some ways. But grungier, most post rock. Would enjoy this track live. The production sounds a bit muffley though.
'Piranah' - I can hear guitars and some drums and vocals not doing much. But I know if I took this to my band they would all go ‘nah lets play that bloody Nickleback cover again’. 'Sandstorm' - nice riff, still can’t hear any words though. Did someone put woolly socks over all the mics?
'Speed of a Nail' has given me a headache. 'Sundown' has a good intro, needs a big scary chant. 'Oooooh to call on the ones of old'. I am going to try putting this on the bigger sound system. It doesn’t play well through flat tannoys.
[Trundles off, trundles back]
Ok, it stills sounds like it has been recorded in a bucket, but now it sounds like it was a lot louder and bigger bucket and my head really hurts now. So I'll have to give this 15 out of 10 for packaging alone. The tracks sound like they might be ace and right up my 2008 grungy prog rock mood, but to be honest I can’t really tell now. I guess I'll check them out live if I get a chance - I think that will work just dandy.
