SugarRush Beat Company is the collective name for LA soul singer Rahsaan Patterson, Australian button-pusher Jaz Rogers, and Danish electro-soulstress Ida Corr. Yes, her off ‘Let Me Think About It’. Someone of Music Towers even interviewed them a while back. They’ve got an album out on Monday, so we’ve been giving it a few spins.

What we like about SugarRush Beat Company:

1. The B-Movie whirls and ghetto spats of ‘They Said I Said’. If The Ronettes ever got into a catfight on flying saucer, we like to think this would be what would soundtrack it.

2. The low soul of ‘L-O-V-E’, even if we have a niggling suspicion that it’s the kind of track that Jools Holland cracks one out to.

3. Rahsaan’s voice when he comes over all squeaky-Prince-a-like.

4. That ‘Oh Lord (Take Me Back)’ sounds a bit like ‘Because I Got It Like That’ by the Jungle Brothers, only at half-speed with some new vocals laid over the top.

Look, it’s the video for ‘L-O-V-E’:

We wanted to show you the video for ‘They Said I Said’ but YouTube says “no”.

What we don’t like about SugaRush Beat Company:

1. The occasion lapse into Mark Ronson-esque bells’n’jazz. STOP IT. We’re talking to the entire pop pantheon with this one, not just SugaRush Beat Company. Which leads us nicely onto….

2. Jaz Rogers needs to keep his hands off the desk sometimes - just because there’s a fancy button to add extra bells and whistles doesn’t mean you need to push it.

3. Because it results in stuff like the embarrassing trance-music-at-Christmas-sounding ‘Love Breed’. That’s not a flowery metaphor, we bet Judge Jules’ Christmas sounds exactly like this.

4. One of the song titles has “Jesus” in it. There’s nothing like the appearance of the alleged Son of God on a record to dampen the fun.

Buy it: if you went to see Stevie Wonder recently, but wished he’d spent less time harping on about his death mother and more time playing the tunes.

Don’t buy it: if you’re still hung up on the 65daysofstatic remixes of The Cure. This isn’t for you.
