With occasional appearances’ in different performance guises down at Rock at the Mean Fiddler and being roped in to working at the Halloween Fright Club…I love the metal, I love the classic rock, I love the punk… And always on the look out for new & exciting goth music as it is rarer than a well dressed Dungeons & Dragons fan. This CD starts up: I am Ghost looks and sound promising. The Classical intro is exciting…

… NO! The album just sinks into the now-formulaic Punk/EMO. How can I take this seriously with this singing? I get confused: I can’t tell his voice apart from any of the Lost Prophets, Bullet for My Valentine, or other much of muchness bands. The Daily Mail reported that EMO was ruining our Kids… they self scar, blah blah blah. If the ignorant journalist knew her sh!t she would of realised that emotional hardcore isn’t killing the kids, it is killing original vocal melodies. Maybe that in turn is affecting our youth, someone order a scientist.

Is this just a sign that I have become too old to review this band, and it doesn’t matter how much I fancy the made up ladies of Camden town. I will never talk with enthusiasm over this Epitaph sensation I am Ghost.

That all said though, listening to it enough and trying to blank out the queasy vocals and ridiculously twittish title… Pretty People Never Lie – Vampires Really Never Die Gets,  is blimming good aside the vocals.

Then it dawns the angle on signing this album: It is DragonForce meets EMO, with a gothic stylist. Understanding that makes the listening easier.

Lovers Requiem is the title track of the album has another brilliant intro, Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind worthy. But again this overwhelming Whine takes precedent … and this whine is now becoming mine. ‘Save us from the evil that we do’ Steven Juiliano cries.

Would I play this out? Only if the kids really didn’t dance to anything else that night. Dangerzone, Wesley Willis & Dillinger Escape Plan exhausted… Only then will I dare reach for I am Ghost, break glass in case of emergencies and just hope that the audience likes Formulaic EMO & Battle Metal. Unfortunately chances are… they will, as it looks like this act is going to be massive!
