Oh that Rivers Cuomo - he's always off going doing stuff that people like to describe as "mental" (although not really, he's hardly Al Jourgensen, is he?) when really he's just a bit reclusive. Well, the effect of this is that every new Weezer record understandably causes all sorts of furore amongst alt-rock types. Will it be another Maladroit? Will it go the way of Pinkerton, derised at first before later being re-assessed as a classic?
With the new record, confusingly called Weezer (although unofficially Red, in the manner that the previous two self-titled Weezer albums are Blue and Green respectively, the band has been undertaking a campaign of misinformation of sorts. All sorts of rumours about tracklistings being hoofed across the internet, some coming from the band, some being the more bizarre theories of fans that somehow digitally snowball out of control.
What is for certain though, is that their new single, 'Pork and Beans', is out in the USA next week. Although there's no UK release date, the song is being streamed on http://www.weezer.com/ so people outside of the US can have a listen too.
They've also confirmed a basic tracklisting of sorts, with region-specific bonus tracks still to be fully confirmed:
1. Troublemaker
2. The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn)
3. Pork and Beans
4. Heart Songs
5. Everybody Get Dangerous
6. Dreamin’
7. Thought I Knew
8. Cold Dark World
9. Automatic
10. The Angel and the One
Both single and album are set to get an official UK release sometime in June.
