V2 sign deal with We7: free music from a Major?
Wednesday, June 20, 2007
V2 has become the first record label to sign a deal with Wee7.com, that looks set to make the entire label's back catalogue available for free over the internet, without any kind of DRM.
And the catch? Well, we7.com makes its money by grafting adverts onto the start of music tracks, which it claims are "micro-targeted" (no, I'm not entirely sure either) at users bsased on location, age and gender. After a set period of time, users can access their tracks without the annoyance of ads, or they can just pay a fee up front and have them clean from the off.
With V2 signing up though, this means that acts such as Bloc Party, Stereophonics, and The Rakes could be available soon, for free. Sweet baby Jesus.
