So Universal have bought V2 - and yet another indie label gets swallowed up by one of the majors. This has been somewhat on the cards for a while, particularly since the US arm of V2, which had been a home for acts such as The White Stripes, effectively closed its doors back in January.
What this sale means is that acts like Sterephonics, The Rakes, and Bloc Party are now under the clutches of Universal. And what will be interesting to industry watchers following this will be what happens with regards to Bella Union, City Slang, and Wichita Recordings, who previously worked closely with V2 through their Co-Operative division.
So far there has been no word on whether this takeover will require further regulatory investigation.
