What's with all the venue closures in London at the moment? The Astoria's future is still heavily in doubt, Hammersmith Palais has barely closed its doors, and word of yet another venue facing the chop has come out.
The Spitz, located down in Spitalfields Market, have been told by their landlords, property developers Ballymore, that they're going to be exercising the break clause in the lease - possibly seeing the venue close its doors as early as September. And be replaced - as rumour has it - with yet another gastropub. Joy.
It seems Ballymore have plenty of plans for Spitalfields - much of it involving converting it into glass retail units for restuarants and the kind of stuff they think city workers want to make use of. Oh, and reducing the number of stalls by about a half.
Far be it for us at Music Towers to scratch our heads at the actions of developers, but you'd have thought that with live music currently more popular and profitable than ever, they'd be delighted to be in possession of one of London's more eclectic little venues? Apparently not.
