Radio 1: Angry With Saatchi
Sunday, May 06, 2007
Following a great piece of investigation by Popjustice.com, Radio 1 have banned 'Style, Attract, Play' by "Shoka vs Honeyshot" after it was revealed the whole thing is an elaborate marketing scam for Shockwaves hair products. After all, the Beeb don't do commerical advertising. Shockwaves of course, are desperate to get in on the musical credibility game, sponsoring the NME Awards and subsequent tour, amongst other things.
Honeyshot were revealed to be a creation of advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi, as a way of trying to sneak inside the brains of unsuspecting music fans without them even realising. But they were somewhat let down by the fact that A) calling their track the same name as the current Shockwaves campaign slogan was a bit of a giveaway, and B) Popjustice were wise to Honeyshot as far back as September - hell, no-one was making any secret of Honeyshot's origins back then.
So far there has been no action taken by XFM or KISS, both of whom have also played the "track". Shockwaves, despite earlier claims that they knew nothing about this marketing ploy, have since admitted "there may be a link" between brand and band.
