OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE OWNERS -- Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises
"At around 1am on Sunday morning staff discovered a fire in the men’s toilets on the top floor of the building. They immediately evacuated the pub and called the fire service. There were about 500 customers in the pub and club at the time and to the best of our knowledge nobody was injured, with only one member of staff being treated for smoke inhalation on site. We are very grateful to our staff for their swift action and for their close following of emergency procedures.
"At the current time, the building is being made safe by the fire service. Once this has been done, the site will be handed over to the police to try to establish the cause of the blaze. When they have finished their work, we will get access to the building with our structural engineers and can assess the extent of the damage and the likely closure period of the venue.
"The building had recently been visited by the fire service and awarded a new fire certificate."
