CD-Wow: Balls Busted By BPI
Tuesday, May 29, 2007
The BPI has announced that last week they won damages running into the tens of millions of pounds, from semi-renegade online retailer, CD-Wow.
CD-Wow had been sourcing their CDs from territories outside of the EU where wholesale costs are much cheaper, then selling them to EU consumers at a much cheaper price than any of their localised competitors. This case follows a similar action taken against the hong-Kong based online service by the BPI back in 2004, when CD-Wow made legal assurances they would cut out this practice.
Whether this breaks the back on the online seller, and the implications of the record industry sueing someone, essentially, for trying to sell more of the product, remains to be seen.
