It would seem the Mama Group plc (formerly Channelfly group plc) and home to the Barfly, is continuing to expand its London retinue. As Live Nation's UK expansion is paused by the Competition Commission, it would seem the Barfly group is buying up in the wake.
The Forum in Kentish Town sale has already been agreed and is trundling through. And the Hammersmith Apollo is close behind it. Now there be talk of The Garage in Islington and the Jazz Café in Camden are to join in on the exodus over to join the Barfly group.
The Barfly has made it’s name and reputation on breaking new bands around the country, and giving small developing bands a chance to play. If these rumoured acquisitions are a reality then these London venues will join a chain of smaller clubs around the country in Glasgow, York, London, Cardiff, Liverpool, and the Brighton festival The Great Escape.
These new buildings are each bigger then any venues that the barfly group currently manage, and it would seem ex-Mean Fiddler CEO Dean James is behind the the acquisitions, being a fair few come from his old firm.
Now the question remains - where has a chain of small dingy clubs rustled up a several million pounds to run some of the countries leading venues? MAMA Group PLC the parent company has issued £15 million worth of shares.
£50 says Live Nation has picked them up and funded the buying of their own venues and gained interest in MAMA (formerly ChannelFly) group.
