Arrests made over Lucky Dube murder
Monday, October 22, 2007
As you may have heard, South African reggae singer, Lucky Dube was murdered last Thursday in an apparent car-jacking incident in Johannesburg. Today it appears that five men have been arrested in connection with the crime. This is just one of the estimated 20,000 murders that take place every year in South Africa.
Lucky Dube was a notable musical protester against the Apatheid government that used to control South Africa - indeed, his 1984 release 'Rastas Never Die', was actually banned under the regime for its anti-apartheid messages. He had won many major international awards, including a "Best Selling African Recording Artist" award from the World Music Awards. He is survived by his widow, Zanele, and seven children.
