Producing songs that barely get past the minute mark and rarely reach the two minute stage, with two mini albums under their belt WOMAN continue hold a wealth of ideas and energy in the palms of their hands and find themselves only stunted by the obstacle of geography.
With a long history of existing in various forms dating all the way back to 2001, the current lineup came into existence in 2004 and reached fruition in 2005 when they recorded their first record “Das Hexer” which was eventually released on Sea Records. Clocking in at seven tracks in eleven minutes, WOMAN can hardly be accused of indulging in flabbiness, instead choosing to be a continued barrage and assault on the senses to anyone smart enough to give the record a listen.
A cosmopolitan four piece comprising of insane Japanese vocals supplied by one Yohei Yashi, this year the band have released their follow up record “Silver Wolf Dog”, again on the Sea Records label. And again clocking in at eleven minutes, continuing the (short) legacy of concise but bountiful disco punk in a Minuteman crossed with Grand Royal vibe, themselves describing their sound as “the exact centre point on the line between “The Message” and (offensive noise band) Harry Pussy.” AdditiWonally there is a circulating comparison to Deerhoof, something no band will ever feel comfortable about.
In a time where flabby indie rock bands are dominating scenes with their consistent whining and the majority of supposed innovative “punk” bands blatantly lack spirit and attitude, the less is more snarl of WOMAN appears as a stroke of genius.
Hi how are you? Who am I talking to today and what are you doing?
Well hello there, this is Guy Forks, I play guitar in Woman, today I've been working (a very boring but necessary evil) and now I'm listening to Black Sabbath and answering these questions.
What is the history of the band?
Well, we formed in Nottingham in, I think, late 2003. We all went to the same university, although we didn't form the band till a year after me & Kristian (drums) had finished. Me & Kristian had jammed together since about 1999 and we just though "jeez, why don't we go and actually form a band that plays gigs and stuff" and Steve, who I'd known for some years before through our previous bands was into handling the bass, and 6 months down the line, after finding pretty much no-one that fit the bill, Steve managed to persuade Yohei to come down and see if she could possibly do some singing. She did come down but she didn't sing for a while. Then eventually she did! Oh, and within about a year of us being together none of us lived there anymore. We still continue to practice there though as its kind of a middle point for us all, and also the place where we practice is totally awesome.
