EC rubberstamps Universal takeover of BMG Publishing
Tuesday, May 22, 2007
Well, while everyone was getting steamed up with the EMI buyout, it seems the EC and given the A-Okay to Universal's bid to buy BMG Music Publishing from Bertelsmann.
The deal, worth an estimated £1.1 Billion, had hinged on the results of the 5-month investigation. By shedding Rondor UK, Zomba UK, BBC Music, 19 Songs, 19 Music, and the European license for the Zomba US catalogue, the European Commission has finally decided that the takeover can go ahead.
This will, of course, make Universal the single largest publishing company in the world. Impala, representing the voice of the indie labels, made a statement saying that while it was glad that a message had been sent to the majors that mergers without concessions weren't possible, it is still considering a legal challenge to the proposed takeover.
