A comedian recently said the only way they'd want to see Geri draped in a Union Jack again, is if she died in battle! Is this a one-sided joke? Or the mutual feeling shared by most?
It’s been eleven years since the Spice Girls burst onto the scene with their smash-hit debut, 'Wannabe'. Five unknown fresh-faced singers led the way to a new era of in-your-face music, with a strong Girl Power! label and the attitude to make them completely respected. They went on to sell 50million albums worldwide, secure nine British no1’s, collect a plethora of awards, and even coin a movie. Now, six years since their final performance, they have decided to stomp back for one last moment of glory. But in declaring a world tour, we must evaluate the sincerity behind their supposed reasons, and ask if this come back is really what we want.
Girl Power was a good theme, it encapsulated the rise of the gang, delivering music from the stronghold of the boy bands, and sent out an important message to their legions of young fans; grab life by the balls, be daring, outgoing, and above all, be yourself. Today, any (at all) interested adult knows this friendly reunion is strictly a façade - even at the launch press party there was tension between the girls, especially between Geri and Victoria, when Posh quipped “[Geri] just appreciates the fact we’ve let her back in.” So aside from the music lovers, this spectacle is once again aimed at their younger audience. But is their new image of Girl Power a good message to impressionable minds? Posh Spice is a WAG, suffers from an eating disorder and is desperately trying to make a name for herself in Los Angeles after her US reality show flopped – Geri is a single mother, and has always loved the attention of the media, but since fizzling out from public attention after her dramatic exit in ’98, has come crawling back “for the fans” – Mel B is also a single mother, divorced, and in the middle of a giant legal battle with the Beverly Hills C*ck (Murphy) for millions of dollars – Baby Spice has accomplished nothing since their break, except failing Strictly Come Dancing, and will be heavily pregnant whilst on tour – and finally Sporty Spice who ain’t so sporty any more, and hasn’t been heard of for years. Oh, and they’ve all attempted post-break-up solo careers… but to no avail.
