Music Towers has just been sent an advert for a compilation album that the NME is launching for crimbo. It is called 'NME Presents: The Essential Bands 2007'. Now call me an old square - but how is this list 'Essential', in any way, shape, or form? Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight, Kaiser Chiefs, Amy Winehouse, Oasis, Kate Nash, The Enemy, Hard-Fi, Babyshambles.
Music Towers editors have been happily going to a gig a week, listening to the radio, done the round of festivals and have essentially missed all these bands in 2007. I will nail my hat to the donkey and say I quite like Arctic Monkeys & Kate Nash, but even spending hundreds of pounds this year on records, I can't say I was ever tempted by those two's albums.
I don't believe in the Essential Bands - aren't we all listening to that long trail of obscure acts at the moment? So please write in and tell us what your essential artists are of 2007.
