What's your DJ handle and real name?
Touché aka Theo Keating
Where are you from?
London. Born here and always lived here.
How would you define your style?
It varies between Electro, House, Rock stuff and other bits. Whatever will
work in my set and get a good reaction.
What got you into DJing/ making music?
Being heavily into Hip-Hop as a teenager, I really wanted to learn how to
scratch etc. So I got some decks. And an interest in old breaks and funk got
me into experimenting with loops, which in turn led to making my first
attempts at songs. And so it goes on.
What are your earliest musical memories?
Listening to my older brother playing Blues and old Irish Republican songs
on his guitar. And his Eddie Cochran & Chuck Berry records. Also my parents
listening to Classical and Jazz LPs. The first record I ever asked for was a
Bay City Rollers single when I was about 5!
What are the best clubs you've ever played?
Manumission in 97/98, The Boutique in Brighton - I have especially fond
memories of when it was at the old scout hut aka Concorde 1, Fabric Live
2000/2001, plus loads of amazing one-off gigs in Tokyo, Iceland, Sydney,
Argentina etc.
What was your worst club experience?
An empty gig is just one of those things, and doesn't really constitute a
'worst gig', but other than those, occasions that stick in the mind are:
being sat in a concrete room in Taiwan as the police raided the club, while
admiring the blood spatters on the wall / touring Germany to a sea of sour
faces in the late 90s / trying to mix on stage in Chile when the sound from
the monitors, headphones, and front of house are all staggered half a second
apart / turning up for a big gig in New York and realizing that they were
expecting a 3 minute PA with playback and dancers etc., not a DJ set /
playing to rednecks in the US at an acoustic gig where Jewel was the
headliner / playing to a crowd of under 18s in the US where Jamie-Lynn
Sigler from the Sopranos was the headliner. They have been some of the more
interesting ones.
