A year ago the only readers were Nick, Ben Osborne and Jon Duckett, Chris Ullman, Damien Littlepond and I. Ben was lining up an interview with a band called Justice that none of us had ever heard of. We all wondered who the hell they were and whether this project was going to work.
Now one year on we had 45 thousand unique readers a month. Ok, so we didn’t launch our clever free download service. But the good thing was we didn’t actually tell anyone about it either. But 2007 is looking exciting, the community is going to get an overhaul and our download service will finally haul ass… Just need to kick the DRM off it all.
MusicTowers.com asked its contributors and friends for their musical moments of 2006.
This is what they said…
Alison ‘Don’t call me Bendy’ Charles
CALL ME A NERD BUT DON'T CALL ME LATE FOR BREAKFAST....one of my many top 2006 moments for me was the OK GO video for HERE IT COMES, slightly more sophisticated than their MILLION WAYS video (filmed for $10 in a back yard, but still fantastic) in one take the band complete the moves on eight moving treadmills (any one who has ever fallen off one we know it hurts) the band went on to perform it live on the MTV awards in August and were visibly relieved when it was over. This amused me one beyond 'normal' whatever hat is. Who needs a big budget? NERDTASTIC.
Andy McNab – Review editor & MSN bigwig
Sparklehorse – what an album, just loved it from start to finish- just awesome!
Andy Stone – Saving the World & One half of Beef Warehouse
For me, ‘Dart For My Sweetheart’ by Archie Bronson Outfit dominated the latter part of 2006. A song so perfect in its menacing construct and militarian delivery, it dresses your ears in bright orange boiler suits before beating you senseless with a knotted rope.
I knew nothing of this hirsute London trio, other than occasional hushed tone name-drops by skinny tied Shoreditch ne’r-do-wells. However, at this year’s Reading Festival, appearing incongruously on the Comedy & Cabaret Stage, ABO revealed their meaty-beaty wares to both me and a bloodthirsty pissed up capacity crowd.
