‘I am now personally fronting a ‘Bring Back Chesney Hawkes’ campaign’
I’ll be honest with you. I’m not a Jason Donovan fan. I’ve never bought his records or followed his career. And on the night in question I missed his support act, JPMAC, as I was too busy at the bar drinking multiple vodka’s in a vain attempt to blur what was obviously about to be a very average gig. But last Friday I joined 3399 die-hard Jason fans and took my seat at the Hammersmith Apollo. It was to be the last time I sat down all night.
The gig itself was a magical musical journey through his career and Jason, supported by his five-piece band and a special four-piece string quartet for this London date, had all of us captivated for the full 90 minutes. All the 80’s classics were in there, big crowd pleasers ‘Nothing Can Divide Us’ and ‘There’s Too Many Broken Hearts’ to name just two. He also played some new material – and it was good. Pure unadulterated pop, but tracks that will undoubtedly put him back into the UK charts. Stand out tracks from his new recordings included the uplifting ‘Share My World’ and power ballad
‘Talking To Myself’. Jason was pitch perfect for the entire gig, and worked hard to whip us up into a frenzy. And in that frenzy we firmly stayed. He spent most of the gig running round on stage and coming out into the aisles where he was regularly mauled and several attempts were made to part him from his clothes by over enthusiastic admirers. All taken with good humour by someone who came across as possibly the world’s nicest man.
Jason himself is a great show-man and all the songs were charmingly interlaced with witty anecdotes, funny celebrity stories, and lots of raw emotion about his own personal journey. A journey that includes Neighbours, Joseph, the Rocky Horror show and most recently ‘I’m A Celebrity’, which bought him back to the forefront of our minds. It’s been a journey of extreme fame with some time spent in the wilderness. One aspect of his life he talked about the most was his overwhelming love for his family – and throughout the night family album photos and press cuttings were projected onto the wall.
