Live: A Long Weekend in Control

The Canadians have arrived. Montreal treats and Vice Magazine bunnies, Chromeo played London and brought the party with them. A mix of 80s funk, old-school lyrics and some hard core talk box abuse in the Big Smoke might not have been so appreciated by the cynical art-rocker kids, but it seems deep down a little fun to be had with no pretence will win out.
First stop, the Water Rats – a tiny room, packed to capacity and the show sold out before the doors opened. The audience are mixed and many people there are not sure what to expect from the geek gangster threesome about to perform.
Dave1, Pee Thugg and their new New Yorker Drummer arrive with a lot of energy and presence, recorded beats shake the floor like a 80s frat movie. The crowd take to this like a duck to water and a dancing party vibe wakes up. Girls dance, even boys dance and moves are pulled from left to right.
In a scene that is still reeling from electro clash irony and new rave neon, Chromeo might have been hard pushed to realise their earnest love of electro funk in the UK. But like a guilty pleasure for all, they seem to hit the right notes to get the audience to shed their cool exteriors and wave their hands in the air.
Needy Girl is the song that you will know, but the last album contains some solid pop funk hits for good times. Added to the fray through the boys’ connections in the industry are fair remixes that do well standing alone.
Late into the night, the duo takes over the decks at Notting Hill Arts Club. A mixed response from the crowd already hyped to dance; they play a closing set that most seem to like but is not best received by the two-step dancing girls who seem to prefer their street sound a little more London.
The following night sees Chromeo play to the choir. The Old Blue Last in East London is full of Hoxton hipsters and Vice boys and girls. The room is jammed and dancing, most people know the words. Part gig and part birthday party the crowd looks a little like Zoo but the show is well received with Dave1 and Pee-Thugg to be found on the dance floor until the small hours making Chromeo sandwiches with some of the east end’s sexiest dancers.
