What do you get if you cross an Italian, an Irishman, three Englishmen, a drummer from Stoke and a French record label?

Well, you get hi-jinks on tour with Daft Punk, office management mayhem courtesy of Babyshambles and, first and foremost, you get Cazals, purveyors of kinetic, layered indie pop and the only “proper” band to be signed to hip electro-dance label Kitsune.

Following a frankly frenzied Levis One To Watch tour last month, Music Towers met lead singer Phil, guitarist and manager Daniel and drummer Warren down the pub to find out if the Francophiles really are the most forward-thinking guitar band in Britain.

What’s the Cazals story so far?

Phil : “It’s nearly four years since we formed, but Warren joined us in 2005. We particularly wanted a drummer from Stoke as we liked the accent and heard they liked to hit things hard. That’s when things began to take shape and we started to sound like Cazals.”

Daniel : “We are all based in London except for Warren who commutes from Stoke and sleeps on my coach. Luca, who also plays guitar, is from Milan so he’s our Italian stallion and now Ben plays keyboards for our live shows."

Warren : “We just had a gig every other night back in 2005, we were touring, touring and touring."

Phil : “It’s been fantastic to get out on the road again this year. We had a lot of momentum before but we took time out to make the record so we thought ‘what’s it going to be like when we get back out there?’, but the response has been really positive.”

Your debut album comes out in May, so that’s quite a wait between starting out and it finally happening.

Phil : “Yeah but we are just relentless because we all believe in it."

Daniel : “We were on another label, 1234 Records but they went dormant."

Phil : “Ran out of cash."

Daniel : “They were crazy times as well."

Phil : “At that point; our manager shared the same office as Babyshambles management and so there was a lot of madness; drugs and guns."

Warren : “And a sword."
