Archie Bronson Outfit is sound-checking at Brighton’s Great Escape festival. The noise they are making is phenomenal. Arp Cleveland is drumming like some kind of Greek demi-god bestowed with special powers from Mount Olympus. The pale, black-clad support band is sulking because everything is running late. Very late. Music Towers bides its time until the sound meets everyone’s requirements. We rush for their pre-performance fuel stop at a pizzeria. Music Towers manages to lure Dor Hobday and Arp away from frontman Sam and their friend and fellow performer James Yorkston.

With elbows propped on a red and white gingham tablecloth that sticks to their skin, Arp and bassist/guitarist Dor consider their experience of the festival so far. They are shocked to hear that The Happy Mondays will be playing a special, invitation-only gig on the pier and at the same time as their own gig. “Oh! I would love to go!” cries Arp. “I saw them at Elland Road at Leeds Festival.” It begs the question, if they were curating The Great Escape, who would they invite? Dor doesn’t hesitate, “I’d invite The Bulgarian Female TV Choir - very well dressed traditional singers.”

Unphased, Arp adds, “The Monks - they’re touring again, and a band from America called The Aquarium, Black Heart Procession who I’ve always enjoyed.”
“Part Chimp!”
 “Yes, and Part Chimp - they’re great. Bob Log, Alexander Tucker. I don’t know!” says Arp exasperatedly, sounding more than a bit like Paul Merton.  “I’d need more thought, I could spend ages working that out!”

Choices, choices. As the pizza menu circulates, thoughts turn to other favourite bands. “To me Clinic,” says Arp, “are the best band in the country, in the world! They are fucking amazing! We’re huge fans. Clinic or, say, another great British band Electrelane - you wonder why they’re not bigger. I think they’re amazing. They’re not Top 10 but a lot of people know who these bands are and rate them highly which is a much better place to be than to be Top 10 this week and 100,019 next year and forever more. I guess Archie Bronson Outfit and a lot of other bands would rather be appreciated in some level highly forever than, than Top 10 now.”
