The Motorettes are the latest trio to be hyped up by those in the know. Their forthcoming cover of Bruce Springsteen’s I’m On Fire already has journalists frothing at the mouth and describing them as ‘the new sound of summer’ Eden Anderson catches up with guitarist/vocalist Robin Howe in the lead-up to the release of their debut album.
So, you guys are from Tynemouth. Tell us about it?
I’m sitting looking out the window now of my place. It’s ace. The River Tyne leads into Newcastle and Tynemouth is just on the coast on the very mouth of the Tyne. It’s like a sleepy little village. The beaches are beautiful and it’s a really relaxed way of life. It’s lush because it’s a little pocket within itself but it’s only a twenty minute drive from Newcastle so you still get all the trappings of city life but you can retreat away from it all. We all grew up here.
Was it a good place to grow up and form a band?
Well, yeah, I mean there’s absolutely nowhere for bands to play but the people we’ve been knocking around with for the past ten years or so have all formed bands or gone on to do other things. People are definitely all buzzing off each other.
You’re signed to Kitchenware records. Probably best known right now as the Editors label. How did that deal come about?
Well they’re a local label here in Newcastle and we knew they’d been interested in us for a while. We were being sniffed out by other labels but we didn’t want to jump into anything. So we met up with Pete from Kitchenware a couple of times and it was just class because he’s a bloke who is bang into his music. He’s based in Newcastle which is obviously perfect and he said he wants to stay independent and he’s just in it for the music and we thought ‘well he doesn’t sound like he’s lying’ - lets give it blast.
Your debut album is out on the 25th August. You excited about that?
Oh totally yeah. It seems like we’ve been waiting ages for it to come out. I mean musically it’s been finished for absolutely ages. We’ve just been waiting for the right time to put it out. When it’s done you’re thinking ‘lets just get it out man’ because we’re not all about ‘oh lets release it at the right time and get it into the charts.’ We just want it to be available because there’s people coming to Myspace and the forum every day saying they can’t wait for the album.
Some of these songs we’ve had for two years. Some people are amazed when (other) debut albums are good but the debut album is the one where you’ve got the most time to work on it, haven’t you?
That’s true.
You’ve got all that time… kicking out the rubbish tunes and stuff and really honing it together. It should be like, like the perfect record.
