Almost two years on from their Mercury Music prize nominated debut Through the Windowpane, Fyfe Dangerfield and his bird-loving band
return with new album “Red”.
But will their latest offering satisfy the indie-pop kids, hungry for more of the band’s sweeping, life-affirming musical curios? Music Towers takes a call from Guillemots guitarist MC Lord Magrao to find out.
Hello, first things first do you prefer to be called MC, Lord or Magrao?
“Ha, ha, well MC Lord is a bit of a joke so you can call me Magrao.
Righty-ho, there’s been a lot of anticipation about the new Guillemots album, how’s it feel now it’s finally arrived?
“We are very excited about it. We're really pleased with it. All the time we spent recording and producing and now we have the final thing in hand and it's a great feeling really.”
Was it easy to write the follow up to Through the Windowpane or did you get struck by second album syndrome?
“The process was really slow and to be honest it was very hard the first few months. We didn’t have any songs that we were ready to record and so the first month was mainly writing songs and then figuring out how to approach them; how to add different emotions to them. It took us nine months but we never had a solid period of time recording; maybe two or three days a week and then we'd go off to play the summer festivals. That broke things up a little bit so sometimes it was hard to keep focused.”
And this time you, Fyfe, Aristazabal and Greig all sat down and wrote the album together.
“Yes that changed things too because with our first album Fyfe wrote most of the songs and we helped with the arrangements but this time spent a lot of time together trying to get our heads around it”.
Did Fyfe go back to his music teacher days and keep you all in line?
No, it was more our job to keep him in line. He's a little bit messy and sometimes he doesn't control what his ideas are. But I guess we are all the same – all over the place.”
