When gothic chart-botherers, Fields of the Nephilim, spluttered their last as a proper band with the relase of 2002’s abortive “Fallen”, As the band transformed into frontman Carl McCoy’s solo-project, Nephilim founder-member Tony Pettitt, teamed up with vocalist/guitarist Peter ‘Bob’ White and drummer Simon Rippin, both formerly of Sensorium, to form the creative core of NFD.

With the release of “No Love Lost” in 2004, they ingratiated themselves to the Fields of the Nephilim fanbase, and with their latest album, “Dead Pool Rising”, NFD are threatening to ride the recent gothic resurgence back to wider success. Music Towers caught up with bass player, Tony Pettitt, as the band geared up to launch their new London club night, Fright Club.

With regards to the new record, how do you think you’ve progressed since the first release?

Our singer, Bob, wrote a lot of it, and I wrote some of it, but basically it was written over a two month period, whereas the first album was bits and pieces that had been knocking around for a couple of years. It’s been more of a snapshot as to where we are at this moment in time as opposed to bits and pieces all bundled together. We’ve gone for a more rock-angle; it’s a bit more mature in some ways [laughs]

You’re still on Jungle records – the popular rumour mill had it that the ex-members of Fields of the Nephilim were pissed off with them for releasing “Fallen”.

Not really….we’d been signed to do an album by SPV in Germany, and we were supposed to deliver that album within 18 months after signing the deal, and 4 years later it still hadn’t been delivered. Jungle took what they had, which was a work in progress, and gave it to SPV to put out over there, then Jungle released it over here. If it hadn’t been released we’d have been in total breach of contract. They didn’t have much option. I wasn’t impressed with what went out because it wasn’t a finished product, but they did it because their hands are tied.

I’ve seen the music video for Light My Way on Scuzz a couple of times.
