Max Sedgley first made waves via a small Italian nu-jazz label three years ago, when his song ‘Happy’ appeared as an extremely limited white label. A three track 12” that clearly showed there was more to come, the release immediately gained glowing reviews and slotted effortlessly into the record boxes of influential DJs such as Gilles Peterson. One other DJ, however, liked it so much he signed Max to his label – that DJ being Rob Da Bank. The Label being Sunday Best. The rest, as they say, is about to happen. We caught up with Max on the eve of the release of his new LP, ‘From the Roots To The Shoots’ and found out where he comes from and what turns him on - musically that is.
What's your DJ handle and real name
Max Sedgley and Max Sedgley!
Where are you from?
London
How would you define your style?
Funky , soulful and very rhythmical.
What got you into DJing/ making music?
I've been making music (or maybe just a noise when I was really little) for as long as I can remember. I showed a natural aptitude for the piano and drums / percussion from an early age and it wasn't long before I was buying records of the artists I really liked. I was also influenced by my father who was a music producer for the BBC and his love of all things jazzy, funky and soulful.
By the time I was about 18, I realised I had a substantial collection of Funk, Soul and Hip-hop records and so playing them out was just a natural progression. I got really into clubbing in the late 80s / early 90s and haven't looked back since.
What are your earliest musical memories?
Probably bashing away at the toy drum kit I had when I was about 3 yrs old.
What are the best clubs you've ever played?
I had some of the best nights I've ever had when I was a student in Edinburgh and I used to play a lot at a place called the Wee Red Bar which was part of Edinburgh Art College. It wasn't a particularly grand venue or anything, but some of the sets I played there were the most enjoyable.
