Major labels and concert promoters would have you believe that live streaming of live bands is a non-profitable, no-go area. But like so much else in the digitization of music, the big boys are just running scared of a future in which they are looking increasingly impotent and irrelevant.
Liveroom.tv sprung up earlier this year, proving that a small team working from a studio in North London can outmanoeuvre people with superior financial clout. During their first foray into putting on and filming bands playing live outside the studio, Music Towers caught up with Producer Andy Chatterley and Director Dawn Crumpler to find out how it all kicked off
Andy: I wanted a way to get my own band seen by a larger number of people, without the hassle of driving around the UK (I basically don’t like being out of the studio!). It dawned on me that by web casting the band, not only were we potentially achieving this, but also we were allowing people that didn’t live in big cities (globally – not just in the UK) to see gigs that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.
Dawn: I met Andy at a Motormark gig, we got chatting. I told him I make music videos, he asked me if I wanted to take on The Liveroom. I said yes please, he stole some of my tobacco and here we are!
Andy: I am a notorious tobacco thief…..I started the liveroom, but realised really quickly that their was no way I could run this thing alone….I am pretty busy producing and remixing and stuff as well….so a chance meeting with Dawn and I realised that she was the perfect person do run it – and now that’s what happens – Dawn is the boss of the Liveroom, but I still steal her tobacco.
So did it go as well as you hoped on Sunday?
(15th October Windmill Brixton)
Dawn: Um…yes and no. The bands were great and we had fun, which was the point of doing it in the first place. However, there are areas to putting on a night like that I wasn’t quite prepared for. Lets just call it a learning curve…
