A lot of people have been noticing West-Country blues-rock trio, Blackbud recently. Including a certain Jimmy Page, who offered the band some words of advice after a show at the London Borderline. Music Towers got on the phone to drummer, Sam Nadel, to find out just what all the fuss is about:

Jimmy Page, yeah, Jesus, what can I say? He’s probably one of the biggest influences on us as a band, as an individual, which is a strange thing because apart from himself and possibly Jimi Hendrix I wouldn’t be able to label anyone else that, musically.

I think that’s why he was interested in our music, as we’re obviously both influenced by the same people, and by him. He came along and talked to us after the show, words of encouragement but I don’t think we were really listening. We were just there, glazed-eyes just smiling and not really believing it.”

Blackbud have been racking up gigs and high-profile support from people like Glastonbury honcho, Michael Eavis with their soaring Buckley-tinged rock. If the sun had a soundtrack to set to in the August evening, it sounds like Blackbud’sFrom The Sky

There seems to have been a lot of word of mouth in Blackbud’s rise so far.

“People want to hear about us in the right way. They want to be told by someone they respect musically, rather than hear someone for the first time on a TV advert or Jonathan Ross or something. You don’t fell like you’re connected to the artist. This way you feel like you’ve found them yourself. And that’s something we’re quite keen on doing, but it’s turned out that it’s happened that way anyway.

Obviously things like television and radio play will be very good for us eventually, but just going out and playing a fuckload of shows is the most important thing to us. Not only do you improve in the process, but you gain a lot of strong fans, the kind of fans who feel proud that they were there for the beginning, so we’ve got a strong live following of people who will come along to support us at the shows.”
